Kalki Koechlin, renowned for fearlessly addressing sensitive issues, recently opened up about a distressing chapter from her past. At just nine years old, she faced abuse at the hands of her own house help. Back then, she was unaware of the gravity of the situation, and it took her years to come to terms with the fact that she had endured physical abuse. Recalling the painful incident, Kalki revealed, “I was nine years old, and this person worked for us. He was only sixteen, underage himself. It took me a long time to even acknowledge that it was abuse because, at that time, it felt like a game – something influenced by what we saw in movies. Like kissing, we saw it in films, and to us, it was all fun and games. It’s only years later that you truly understand what was actually happening.”

It took her a significant amount of time to confront it and find her own path towards healing. In a poignant revelation, Kalki shared that her mother also had a similar experience in her youth. It took almost six to five decades for her mother to eventually let go of the haunting memories, underscoring the enduring impact of such events.
Kalki strongly believes in the importance of sharing these experiences, even if it happens later in life. As she eloquently puts it, “You don’t know who needs to hear this.” By speaking out about her own journey of healing, Kalki aims to provide comfort and support to others who may have undergone similar ordeals.
