These days, the Bollywood music industry is more about remixes than originals. It’s a fact that has irked many music fans. With the death of legendary singer KK, an era comes to an end. KK has given us a soulful playlist that will always remind us of a melodious and versatile singer whose contribution to the film industry is immeasurable, and this void will never be filled. A Twitter thread has pointed out the aforementioned statements aptly and we could not agree more.
Sonia Mariam Thomas, in her tweet, expressed grief over KK’s death and also made a very valid and thought-provoking point that most people will agree with. Sonia begins by mentioning the seemingly endless number of elegies written in response to the singer’s death and then goes on to highlight a stark fact that Bollywood has been very “fickle” for playback singers. It’s now a place where remixes and rehashes reign supreme instead of original, and as Sonia mentions, “coherent” soundtracks.
Bollywood, we know, has been fickle for playback singers. More so since remixes ended the concept of a coherent soundtrack. There are exceptions, I’m aware. But that’s not the point.

She acknowledges the fact that there are exceptions. However, can we all agree that she’s right about how there is barely any popular music in Bollywood at present that isn’t remixed? Sonia concludes by resonating with the collective loss that we KK fans feel right now, while also mourning that glorious era of Indian playback singing that perhaps will never be able to recover from the loss of talent like this.

I don’t have to really ponder much over this thread to know she speaks facts. If you open my playlist, you’ll find it full of songs from the early 2000s, when Bollywood would produce such fantastic music, and singers like KK lent a soundtrack to our every memory. And now it is just dependent on the popularity of its remixes. While we grieve over the loss of legendary talent, we hope to see Bollywood realise the needs of its audience and bring that lost era of originality back.
