The Man Behind: This Son Helped His Mom Find Her Passion For Fashion!

As a woman in India, we’re all told time and again that our existence means nothing without a man. From using our father’s name as our middle name to taking our husband’s last name, a woman’s identity is always attached to a man. But over the years, our gender has been actively fighting against the norms and breaking the gender-based norms, one at a time. And let’s be honest, that’s not possible unless we have support from the other gender. You know how they say, “Behind every successful man, there stands a woman”, the same way behind every successful woman, there needs to be a man who helped her fight patriarchy to spread her wings and fly. That’s exactly what Hauterrfly’s The Man Behind is all about.
In the latest episode of The Man Behind, we meet Saif, a son who helped his mom, Nasreen pursue her passion and find her identity. Speaking to Hauterrfly, the mother-son duo shared their story. Nasreen opened up about how it was only her son Saif who believed in her and helped her start her own clothing brand when no one else believed in her.

“When I got married, everyone in the family would introduce me to people as their daughter-in-law and my husband would introduce me as his wife and after we had kid, I was known as Saif’s mother. This always made me realise that I was only someone’s daughter, wife, daughter-in-law and mother but I was never myself, never Nasreen. It would hurt me considering that I’m so talented and capable but I was unable to do anything about it,” said Nasreen. Despite all the support from her elder son, Saif, Nasreen couldn’t pursue her career for the longest time because her husband did not like it.
Opening up about helping his mom, Nasreen’s son, Saif said, “I’ve always been hearing since my childhood about how my mother wanted to pursue something but never could and I also saw her wearing the most fashionable outfits that she sewed on her own. I saw my mother’s pain when no one else could. My father would travel for work and I was in a different town and my brother wouldn’t be around which made my mother feel very lonely. I wanted her to have something of her own, a life of her own apart from her family and I saw her potential.”

It was after this that, Saif convinced his father to let his mother start her own clothing label and then surprised his mom by gifting her lots of fabric dyed in different colours and asked her to create her own collection and come back to him. And when she did, Saif helped Nasreen start an Instagram page and her own clothing brand.
