All You Need To Know About The Intern And Its Remake Starring Deepika Padukone And Amitabh Bachchan

If you’ve been glued to your social media and follow all the right Instagram / Twitter accounts, you probably know by now that Deepika Padukone was going to star in the official Bollywood remake of The Intern. The 2015 film written and directed by Nancy Myers starred Anne Hathaway as the young and successful founder of a fashion startup and Robert De Niro as a retired senior who joins her company as the eponymous intern. Earlier, Rishi Kapoor was set to reprise De Niro’s role. However, after the actor’s demise last year, Amitabh Bachchan has stepped into the titular role. And according to Deepika and Big B’s social media, the film is very much going on floors, with Amit Ravindernath Sharma as director.

Deepika Padukone’s Ka Productions is one of the producers. Warner Bros., which was the production company of the original, is also on board for this one. The dialogues and adapted screenplay are by Akshay Ghildial and Mitesh Shah.

What is The Intern about?

Released in 2015, The Intern is a buddy comedy-drama. Robert De Niro plays Ben Whittaker, a septuagenarian widower who has retired from his job, but doesn’t want to stop working. In Brooklyn, a fashion startup, as part of a community outreach programme to employ a senior citizen, hires Ben as one of four interns, and that’s how he ends up working for the startup’s young and workaholic CEO, Jules Ostin, played by Anne Hathaway.

Initially Jules doesn’t have much time or work for Ben and is unsure about his hiring. She is under a lot of pressure from her investors to step aside and appoint a CEO who can handle the staggering growth of her 18-month-old startup. Her relationship with her daughter Paige, and her stay-at-home husband, Adam, are further reasons why Jules is considering the respite that stepping down might offer.

With his experience, congeniality, and dedicated work ethic, Ben the intern manages to make himself indispensable to the company, thereby catching Jules’ attention. The two strike an unlikely friendship, and he helps her see what the right decision might be for her, and how she can strike a balance between personal and professional.

The film also starred  Anders Holm, Andrew Rannells, Adam DeVine, and Zack Pearlman.

Did you know, even Quentin Tarantino loves The Intern!

The Intern received mixed reviews when it released. I, for one, found the film quite endearing, and the chemistry between the actors was so wholesome. What I also loved about the story is that it didn’t overdo the emotions, and insert any grand gestures of friendship or love. It was subtle and effective, and a film that’d leave you with a warm, mush feeling.

One thing that was unanimously agreed upon was that Robert De Niro put up a fine performance. In fact, none other than Quentin Tarantino raved about the film! During an interview where he was talking about a leading portal’s director’s roundtable being all male-dominated, Tarantino referred to the The Intern when talking about periods of boom and periods of slow bust when it comes to female directors in Hollywood. He called The Intern, written and directed by Nancy Myers, as one of his favourite films of the year and De Niro’s performance as one of the year’s best performances as well.

“One of my favorite movies this last year was Nancy Meyers’ The Intern. They’re not considering that for the Oscars even though I think Robert De Niro gave one of the best performances this year in that movie. I thought the script was actually one of her best. Right up there with It’s Complicated. They’re not asking her to be part of the discussion.”

Excited to see what the Bollywood remake of The Intern brings to the table!

When I first heard that Deepika Padukone and Rishi Kapoor would be reprising Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro’s roles, I thought it was the absolute perfect casting. Somehow Kapoor fit that role in my head like a glove; he did have that adorable, affable air around him, that we’ve seen in films like Love Aaj Kal, Hum Tum, Kapoor & Sons and so on. It makes me sad that we cannot see him in a role that was so apt for him.

That being said, Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone created such magic in Piku, and I am looking forward to watching them work together again! In fact, I am not the only one. Amongst those excited for this film is Ranveer Singh, who didn’t waste a minute and immediately posted about the film to cheer his wifey on!

Great casting aside, it is going to be interesting how Bollywood makes this film its own and what additions or modifications it makes to the story. Knowing Bollywood, things are going to be adapted to fit the Indian audience’s sensibilities, and that’s something I am excited to see.
