Twitter Questions Society On Being Okay With Women Leaving Family After Marriage But Unhappy When Men Do It!
The most common marriage custom in India is the woman leaving her household to ‘settle’ at her husband’s place. There are certain sections of India wherein the man has to go to his wife’s place after marriage but we’re not talking about that here. Like most marital rituals and traditions, this one, too, is deeply rooted in patriarchy. And when a young girl ever questions this tradition, she is told that this is the rule of the land and this is expected of a woman. A Twitter user pointed out how a woman leaving her house and her life behind to start a new one with her husband is unquestioned but heaven-forbid a man decides to leave his parents to live with his wife separately, everyone remembers the sacrifices his mother and father made to raise him.
The Twitter user who goes by the handle @girlwithwingss took to the micro-blogging site to write that while women are expected to leave their homes they grew up in and their parents behind after marriage, expecting men to do the same makes them suddenly realise the sacrifices their parents made. She further went on to write that by that logic, even a girl’s parents do that for her so is it not unfair to her?
If funny how girl leaving her family after marriage is unquestionable, but when it comes to a man leaving his family, all of sudden everyone remember parents sacrifice, they have risen us, responsibilities, gave education etc etc…
Doesn't girl's parents too do all these?

This tweet gained traction as a lot of people online came forward to share their views on it. One of them wrote that if a girl says she wants to live separately with her husband, she is labelled a ‘home wrecker’. Another pointed out the obvious that a guy’s family is never going to object to this tradition because it is a ‘win-win’ for them. Another Twitter user also mentioned how if the guy says he wants to live separately with his wife, everyone assumed it must be the wife who has instigated him.
They even call girl as home wrecker, the who came to snatch their son what not

No guy or guy’s family will ever speak against this tradition. Because ofcourse unko kya taqleef ho rahi hai it’s a win win for them in every way. It’s us girl who have to speak against it again and again, for years, to bring any change.

Exactly, ladka shadi ke baad dusre ghar mein shift hone ki baat kare to sabse pehla khayal sabke dimag mein yahi aata hai ki jaroor iski biwi ne hi "uksaya" hoga, uksaya my God, wo to khud apna ghar chodke aayi hai

It makes no sense to villanise a woman on her preference for wanting to live alone with her husband. If the in-laws and the husband have certain expectations from her, she does the same.
