Sahar Tabar, Famous As Zombie Angelina Jolie, Gets 10-Year Jail Sentence In Iran. Seriously?

Everyday I wake up and check the news, I feel like we’re regressing a little further than the day before. And that’s not what you want to start off your week with. Here we’ve been dreaming of flying cities and The Jetsons wala life. But can you imagine that while on the outside, our world will be a scientific and technological marvel, on the inside, we’ll still believe in über regressive sh*t like religious superstition or squashing freedom of expression. Or telling women what they can and cannot do with their bodies. I recently read about Instagrammer Sahar Tabar from Iran, famously knowns as Zombie Angelina Jolie, getting sentenced to jail for 10 years before she dared post a joke on her Instagram. The girl is 19. Nineteen.

ICYMI, Sahar Tabar, whose real name is Fatemeh Khishvand is from Tehran. She went viral on social media when in 2017 she posted pictures of herself looking like Angeline Jolie, but like a zombie version of her. It began circulating that Tabar had undergone some 50 surgeries to achieve the look. However, later on, she admitted that while she had undergone surgeries like liposuction, lip fillers and even a nose job, the zombie Angelina Jolie look she posts are mainly a lot of Photoshop and epic makeup skills. Her fans are aware of the same.

“This is Photoshop and make-up. Every time I publish a photo, I paint my face in an increasingly funny way. It is a way of expressing yourself, a kind of art. My fans know that this is not my real face. I did not even think about being like Jolie. Also, I did not want to resemble the cartoon character the Corpse Bride,” Tabar has said.

However, the Islamic Republic seems to lack a good sense of humour, or maybe they seem to be against women’s freedom of expression. Because they’ve gone ahead and sentenced Sahar Tabar to 10 years of imprisonment on counts of blasphemy, inciting violence, gaining income through inappropriate means and encouraging youth to corruption.

According to a report by The Guardian, in October of last year, Iran’s state TV broadcast Tabar’s “confession” and even described her as  “a victim with an abnormal personality and mental state”. Her medical history, which indicated that she had visited psychiatric hospitals and likely had a mental illness made it harder to get her sentence dismissed.

Excuse me while I go hit my head against a wall. Perhaps that will help me better understand in what universe do these charges or this punishment make sense to be dropped on the head of a 19-year-old girl.

Iranian journalist Masih Alinejad has been speaking up against Tabar’s and three other female Instagram influencers’ arrests by the government on similar accounts of “promoting public corruption”.

Alinejad has also called upon the real Hollywood actress, Angelina Jolie to help with Sahar Tabar’s release. “The Islamic Republic has a history of tormenting women. We need to be united against this gender apartheid,” she said.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why we’re still permitting countries like Iran to continue to suppress free-thinking men and women. Even if, as the records suggest, Sahar Tabar was mentally ill, she does not deserve to be put behind bars but get treated for it! Her punishment isn’t just not commensurate with her alleged crime, there technically is no crime here! All Sahar Tabar did was post edited photos of her and flaunt her makeup skills to put a silly twist on one of her all-time favourite actors. Arresting her for it is ridiculous. There’s a dark web full of child pornographers out there that continue to be protected by laws but here we are, arresting teenagers for making a joke.

So yeah, don’t have much hopes for our future to be some swanky, futuristic space. We’ll be doing more of this,
