Rihanna Bestowed With Title Of National Hero After Barbados Parts Ways With British Monarchy

Never forget your roots. This is something that we are raised with. That no matter where we go and who we become, it is important to remember where you came from and the people who got you there. Doing that not only makes sure that you have a home to return to when needed but you remain humble. That is something our girl Rihanna has clearly held on to as she is still very much involved with the government and the betterment of her home country, Barbados. She is has been the cultural ambassador for Barbados since 2008 and has taken her role seriously and helped promote tourism there. She also reportedly bought $700,000 worth of ventilators for her Barbados during the Covid-19 pandemic last year. One more feather has been added to Rihanna’s cap as she was declared the National Hero of Barbados as the country celebrated becoming a republic.

After 400 years under the British Monarchy, Barbados has decided to part ways with the Queen and establish its own independent Republic. The was announced by their president-elect Sandra Mason as they had already announced their intention of breaking ties with the monarchy last year itself.  Rihanna attended the inauguration ceremony for Mason in her hometown which is Bridgetown on November 30. Within the ceremony, PM Mia Mottley honoured Rihanna (whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty) with the title of National Hero of Barbados. While bestowing the esteemed title on to her, PM Mottley reportedly said, “May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation by your words, by your actions, and to give credit wherever you shall do it.” Rihanna will be now be known by the honorific The Right Excellent.

Rihanna was born in Barbados and raised in Bridgetown. She lived there until her teen years where she was discovered by American Record Producer Evan Rogers. She then moved to the US to begin her music career. It is very heartwarming to see someone not only represent but genuinely honour their true culture and home country. It is so easy to be swept up in western society and especially with the prominent racism present in the US, it is common to see POC lose touch with their true identities. However, Rihanna has stuck to hers and that is admirable!
