Barbie Is More Than A Movie, It Is A Love Letter To Female Friendships

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie is still making waves across the world. Honestly speaking, I hardly saw any woman complaining about this film. Guess who had bad reviews to give about Barbie? Of course men! If men with fragile egos felt threatened by the Barbie movie, then Gerwig emerged successful because the whole movie was about fighting patriarchy and empowering women. But for the women, this movie meant a whole lot to women because there was finally a movie that understood women and stood for female friendships. Recently, I came across a reel that said that the Barbie movie teaches us to cherish our female friendships. So, on National Girlfriends Day, let’s talk about this.

The Barbie movie was based on how patriarchy still runs things in the real world. It is quite the reflection of the real world where women are objectified, not given an equal opportunity to prove themselves and merely confined to gender-based roles. But like in the real world, women are sticking by each other to fight this common fight against patriarchy, the Barbie movie teaches women to appreciate female friendships.

In a world dominated by men, there are thousands of them just waiting to tear a woman down. To see her fail and laugh at her misery. But it will always be the women who have your back, who push you to do better, and who motivate you to go apply for that job which you think you won’t get it. Just like shown in the Barbieland, your real-life Barbies will not allow you to give up and settle. Female friendships are like Ruth Handler’s spirit from the film who will support and guide you through the difficult days.
