As a woman, I feel extremely grateful for the female friends I have in my life. My work besties in the office and my personal circle (more like a triangle) of friends all consist of girls. So, on National Girlfriends Day on August 1, I wished all my dear girlfriends and told them how special they are to me. But when I Googled National Girlfriends Day, all the articles that came up were about “girlfriends” in romantic relationships and what boyfriends should do to make their girlfriends feel special. Erm, guys, I would like to clarify that this day is about female friendships and not about girls who are romantic partners.

National Girlfriends Day
It was quite surprising to see news portals and almost every other website treat National Girlfriends Day as it is a day for romantic girl partners. But it is not! The day solely commemorates female friendships and how important they are to women. There’s just something inexplicable about having women as friends. The bond is so pure and beautiful because you know that all of y’ll are going through the same thing and fighting similar battles. And nothing makes you feel more powerful than knowing that all your girlfriends are fighting the biggest battle against patriarchy.

First celebration
The first celebration of this glorious day was done in 2004 when a lifestyle guru Mistress Susan came up with the concept of this day with the intention of giving women a day to celebrate their female friendships. In a day and age where women are often pitted against each other and there are pick-me girls all around, this day signifies that all women must stand together to fight social injustices and not each other.

Women have been each other’s biggest allies from the start. Right from the Suffragette movement to the #MeToo movement and anti-abortion rights, women have stood by each other to fight for basic rights. You know women are special and more understanding when you ask one for a pad and they will willingly hand you one after rummaging around in their bag despite it costs an arm and a leg.

So boys, kindly do not misunderstand this day as a day for your premika. Do not steal the thunder from this day that is only reserved for female friendships and not pyaar ka izhaar.
