Men Slut-Shaming, Objectify Women To Scare Them Away From Male-Dominated Industries!
Such fragile male egos!

Feminism might be at its peak but it still doesn’t change the fact that we live in a male-dominated world. Over the years, women have managed to make a place for themselves in this world. Today, we find women doing jobs that were for the longest time believed to be for men. From astronauts to pilots to bus drivers, women of the 21st century are doing everything that men do. However, this doesn’t change the fact that even now there are several industries that are dominated by men, these men gatekeep it to ensure that they can keep women out. In fact, they don’t just gatekeep, they also question the capabilities of a woman in a male-dominated industry. The biggest proof of this is the recent case where Mashable India’s host, Niharica Raizada was trolled and sexualised for hosting an automobile show.

We often see that when a woman claims to know about a sport or technology (which is generally believed to be a man’s domain), men find it hard to believe it and question the woman’s knowledge. While I’m not a fan of a particular sport, I have several female friends who love sports like football and cricket and follow these sports like any other fan. However, whenever they claim to know about the sport, men ask them in-depth questions about the sport because, to them it’s not very comfortable to know that a woman even knows or understands it, let alone a woman who knows more than them. It’s the same when it comes to automobiles. We may know female bikers and car racers and reviewers but several men find it tough to accept it and digest knowledge shared by women. This is precisely why Mashable India’s show Hot Wheelz‘ cardiologist turned auto enthusiast host, Niharica Raizada was attacked. In fact, several trolls even made personal comments and sexualised the former Miss India UK and Miss Universe runner-up.

But have you ever thought about why men do this? Allow me to explain. Essentially, men gatekeep these male-dominated areas because social conditioning and toxic masculinity makes them feel insecure and question their masculinity when a woman tries to enter this space. And they react to it by attempting to intimidate a woman by asking questions to test her knowledge and when that does not work, they try to scare the woman away by slut-shaming or sexualising her. In short, men use trolling, sexualising and slut-shaming as ammunition against women in order to gatekeep male-dominated industries to protect their “masculinity”.

In 2023, it’s a shame that men continue to allow old and rusted social norms and conditioning to decide what is masculine. And while our patriarchal society considers women to be the weaker sex, it’s the male ego and masculinity that continues to remain fragile AF! Someone needs to tell these men with fragile masculinity that a woman knowing more about sports or cars does not make them less of a man.
