Hautetalk: Priyanka Chopra Is Just One Of Many Women Persecuted For Her Affairs While The Men Escape Unscathed

The narrative around affairs need to change.

Affairs and extra-marital relationships in the entertainment industry, be it in India or abroad, are not unheard of. Let’s be honest. The entertainment industry is more scandalous than entertaining, and most actors and actresses have had flings with their co-stars. Now now, I stand nobody to judge who sleeps with whom but I do have a problem with the way the news of these affairs portray the woman as the culprit.  As if she is the only one who is responsible for the scandal while the man she was with walks away unscathed. Not one question is raised about his integrity or character. The recent bombshell podcast interview that Priyanka Chopra gave is proof that society will be quick to cast out a woman if her affair comes to light but the man she was with is not batted an eyelid at.

There are several reports, some of which might be rumours, about Priyanka Chopra’s alleged affairs with Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, and even Shahid Kapoor. But do you see the narrative around Priyanka’s relationships? Every time a new rumour or a link-up made headlines, it was made to sound like it is the actress’ fault or she is the one responsible for it. Horrible questions about her character were raised, and she was called derogatory names as well.

In the alleged Priyanka Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan affair, the actress faced so much flak from the industry that Gauri Khan got her banned from getting cast in movies. Why couldn’t she have done the same for her husband?

It is not just Priyanka Chopra I am talking about here. History has been proof of how women are villianised in affairs. Take the classic example of Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan. To date, if there’s an old picture of theirs that makes it to social media, the way she will be slandered for being a home wrecker is disgusting. Why did no one ever call you Senior Bachchan for having affair despite being married?

Similarly for Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan. People trolled the Emergency mercilessly for saying that she band Hrithik were dating. People wanted to know all the whats, whens hows and whys from her but not one of them had the guts to question Hrithik about this. Even in the case of Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra, the media addressed them as exes when they wished each other on their respective weddings with Ranbir Kapoor and Kiara Advani.

And it is sad to think that these link-ups still crop up if there is a conversation about her personal life and marriage. But what of the men who were in a relationship with these women? Their career never took a hit because of these love affairs, and not no one even dare ask them about it.

This biasness of the people obviously stems from patriarchy, and the anchoring belief that men will be men, but it is the women who need to keep themselves in check. The actress becomes the poster girl of all the things a woman should not be whereas the actor remains unbothered by all this.

It is high time this misogynist narrative changes. Both the actress and the actor both got themselves into this mess, and both should be held responsible for it. And for God’s sake, words like home wrecker, and man stealer need to retire because the man wrecked his own the moment a thought to have an affair entered his mind.
