Lizzo Reveals That She Found Self-Love Through Twerking And Wants To Destigmatize The Word ‘Fat’

As a woman on the “healthy” side of the spectrum, I’m used to being self-conscious and having a suitcase of insecurities that never seem to leave my side. But now that I’m in my mid-20s, I’m slowly but surely becoming more comfortable in my body. And I’d like to give credit to a lot of celebrities that have helped me overcome my insecurities. One of them is Lizzo. The American singer revealed at the SXSW that she discovered self-love through twerking and wants to destigmatize the word ‘fat’.

Melissa Viviane Jefferson, who is popularly known as Lizzo, in her speech, said that she found self-love in a physical way – through twerking. She spoke about how though over the years the idea of self-love has become commercialised and materialistic, for her real self-love is when people shed layers and be at peace with who they are.

Lizzo said, “It led me to find self-love in a physical way… Twerking led me to falling in love with my ass, led me to looking in the mirror, led me to discovering myself and kind of excavating who I am, and falling in love with that person.”

Speaking further about wanting to destigmatize the word ‘fat’, Lizzo reminisced about the time when she used to be called ‘fat-ass’ in the fifth grade. But over time, she started accepting herself and realised that the word had lost its meaning. The singer said, “I used to get called ‘fat-ass’ every single day on the bus in the fifth grade, and by the 500th ‘fat-ass,’ I started to just say, ‘Who (expletive) cares? It means nothing to me.’ The word lost its meaning, it lost its sting.”

Having said that, Lizzo said that she does understand that the word ‘fat’ can be hurtful for many but for her now she is okay with calling herself fat. She further went on to say, “What I really want to do is take away that steam from that word for everybody, because I’ve done it for myself. And it’s really liberating.”

Having been called fat most of my life, I can agree that the word can definitely haunt you. And I can honestly say that I extend my full support to the singer for destigmatizing the word.
