Twitter Is Stumped At Lara Dutta’s Transformation For Bell Bottom Into Former PM Indira Gandhi. NGL, It Is Insane!
I think this is has been going around a lot lately, with actors undergoing unbelievable transformations to get into a role. And no, I am not talking about the insane Christian Bale type transformations of the body, but the one where prosthetics are involved to make them nigh unrecognisable. For example, when I saw the trailer for Ridley Scott’s House Of Gucci, it took me a while to digest that it was Jared Leto looking absolutely nothing like himself. That same could be said for Colin Farrell, who we’ve seen glimpses of as Penguin transformation for Matt Reeves’ The Batman. And closer home, we recently saw Kay Kay Menon don prosthetics to look like three completely different people in the ‘Bahroopiya’ segment in the Netflix anthology Ray. But now one more name has gotten added to this list. Lara Dutta for the Akshay Kumar starrer spy flick, Bell Bottom!
Bell Bottom has been a long awaited releases, and with cinema halls across the country set to open, experts (and celebrity tweets, apparently) are touting it to be the perfect opener film to bring audiences back to the theatres. The trailer for the film, which is directed by Ranjit M Tewari and also stars Vaani Kapoor, Lara Dutta, and Huma Qureshi, was released yesterday. And while the conversation around it has been as expected, there’s one unexpected twist in the trailer that has most people stunned.
Is that really Lara Dutta as former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi? What? Get outta here!

I remember reading about Bell Bottom while it was still being shot, and was aware that Lara Dutta was in the film. So naturally, when the trailer dropped, I mentally checked off everything I saw that I knew would be in it. When the former Miss Universe was nowhere to be seen, I kinda went back and played the trailer for the second time, because the PM’s voice seemed too familiar to ignore. And then it hit me!
Definitely kudos to the hair and makeup team for making Lara Dutta look super convincing as Indira Gandhi. What’s more, it looks like the actor possesses the perfect diction and demeanour for this role because she appears like just enough formidable and intense yet composed, as you’d expect a head of state to be in a situation like the one in the film. I remember wondering, before I knew it was Lara Dutta, about who this actress was!

During the Bell Bottom trailer launch, Lara Dutta revealed that she agreed to the role even before she had heard the script, and paid major attention to get the body language of the former PM right.
“As you know the film deals with the hijack situation that happened during Indira Gandhi’s tenure. So given the dramatic turn of events that were unfolding, she was always somebody who was extremely centered and never really prone to dramatics. So, it was very important to portray her in that form. I had a great time. There was a lot of homework and research that went on behind it but it was an opportunity of a lifetime that I’m very thankful for it,” she said.
