Hautetalk: Has The Celeb And Paparazzi Symbiotic Relationship Grown Too Toxic For Comfort?
This unhealthy obsession with celebs needs to end!

Alia Bhatt made headlines last night after she called out paparazzi who clicked pictures of her sitting inside her living room. She rightly called it a gross invasion of privacy. Several other celebs including Arjun Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Anushka Sharma and others came out in support of the actress and hit out at the paparazzi for their actions. But this isn’t anything new. Over the years, several celebs have called out paparazzi for encroaching into their personal space, mobbing them and crossing the line but things haven’t changed.
It’s essential to understand that celebs and media have a symbiotic relationship where they cannot survive without each other. In 2023, celebs have put themselves out there on their social media profiles. They regularly share glimpses of their lives with us on social media. They have also started calling paps to let them know about where they’re going to be (or so the buzz says). Celebs pose for the shutterbugs without hesitation. And in times like these, the paps have made this relationship unhealthy and toxic by crossing lines and invading the personal space of the celebs.

From mobbing celebs to clicking pictures of them in uncomfortable situations and at inappropriate times like funerals, paparazzi have spiralled out of control over the last few years. They have gone from nicely asking actors to pose for the camera to secretly clicking their pictures in their personal space. TBH, at this point, it’s just bordering voyeurism. And that too when celebs have given us access to their personal lives and information. So, where do we finally draw the line?

Despite all the access that paps and fans have to the lives of their favourite celebs, paps have taken the power given to them by the celebrities to cross the line and encroach upon their lives to the point of no return, all for the sake of “exclusive” content. Come to think of it, what are we going to get out of looking at pictures of Alia Bhatt lounging in her living room? How is looking at secretly clicked pictures of celebs in their private space interesting? How is this counted as “exclusive content”?

There was a time when people had to go through pages of magazines to look at amazing pictures of their favourite celebs but now that all of it is accessible to us, thanks to social media, paps seem to be pushing the envelope. Furthermore, their actions have started affecting celebs so much that they have had to come out to call out paps. While it may be a symbiotic relationship, the shutterbugs need to understand that lines might be blurred but they still exist and some boundaries must be respected.

Let’s think about it. Would any of us be okay with someone secretly clicking pictures of us while we sit in the comfort of our homes where we are supposed to feel safe and comfortable? Of course, we wouldn’t. So, how can we expect celebs to be okay with this kind of behaviour? They may be public figures but they’re still very much human and are allowed to live in peace and have privacy, which just BTW is a fundamental right of every single Indian citizen.
