‘Hautesteppers’ 3.0: Ghazal Alagh Says It’s Okay To Bust Gender Stereotypes When You Walk Into A Room. We’re Nodding Our Heads In Agreement!

Starting something from scratch is always difficult and scary, but it can be even more daunting for a woman who is not just starting new but also entering a male-dominated industry with barely any knowledge of the field. It is only with their hard work and dedication do they break the glass ceiling and gender stereotypes. One such woman who has time and again broken stereotypes in the business world is Ghazal Alagh. The founder of MamaEarth who was recently featured in Hauterrfly’s Hautesteppers latest episode shared what her experience was like to start a business she had very little knowledge about.

In the latest episode of Hautesteppers, Ghazal Alagh talks about how her journey to finding MamaEarth started from a personal problem which was finding toxic-free and natural products for her baby. And so for the longest time, she bought products from abroad but even those did not suit her son – this gave her a strong sense of purpose to start a brand.

For the first one and a half to two years, her motivation was to find a solution that was natural and free of toxic elements. During those years, Ghazal Alagh was not only building a skin-friendly brand, MamaEarth, but was also busting myths that revolved around her not finding investors because she had very little knowledge and no R&D experience. The only way she burst those myths was by doing research and a lot of reading.

In the video, Ghazal Alagh talks about how it took her quite some time to get comfortable in the beginning as most of her third-party vendors and manufacturers were men. In fact, even they took some time to get comfortable with the fact that they were dealing with a woman in this male-dominated sector.

However, when the business started booming, it was much easier for them to accept and respect her as a businesswoman. But things changed again when she got pregnant with her second child. Ghazal Alagh said that during her second pregnancy she was told to take a break and take it slow.

But Ghazal Alagh never for once understood why she needed to take it slow as she knew she could manage both – and she did. She said, “There are a lot of stereotypes that exist but as a person, if you’re busting them in front of other people every time that you walk into a room, it’s fine. And I see powerful women doing that now. And I love the change happening in this ecosystem. I love how women have started standing up for them, and how women are supporting each other. It is the greatest booster of confidence and motivation that you get from your peers.”

Watch Ghazal Alagh, founder of MamaEarth, tell her story on Hautesteppers:

It honestly, is so inspiring to watch a woman who is not just self-made but is also facing gender stereotypes head-on. She truly is someone that many young women look up to.
