Somy Ali Gets Candid About Her Relationship With Salman Khan And Why They Broke Up
I think most of us have experienced celebrity crushes. I remember having the biggest crush on Ranbir Kapoor back when he debuted in Saawariya (let’s not talk about the success of the movie). I remember gushing over him and fantasizing about marrying him (I was a child, leave me alone). However, I never took it seriously and knew that this was just a distant fantasy that will amount to nothing. However, Somy Ali was more determined about her celebrity crush than I was as she flew from America to India to meet (and marry) her celebrity crush Salman Khan at the age of 16! She recently opened up about why they ended up parting ways and what Salman and his family taught her.
Somy Ali is known for her humanitarian work for people from the LGBTQ+ community and children in general. However, she is also known for her relationship with Salman Khan which spanned almost a decade in the 90s (1991-1999). Somy Ali recalled how she first saw Salman in Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989, and a 16-year-old Somy fell in love with Salman, who was the lead actor of the movie. After a dream, she decided to fly to India. However, she does acknowledge that it was naive of her to want to fly to India to marry Salman Khan. She started packing a suitcase and told her mother that she was going to go to India to marry a Bollywood star. Her concerned mother locked her in the room, a tad bit severe but can you blame her? Somy Ali ultimately convinced her father by telling him that she wanted to visit relatives in Mumbai and visit the Taj Mahal, she also played the religion card to convince him. Well, the heart wants what it wants.
Somy Ali did end up completing her mission as she did meet Salman and even shot an eventually shelved film together. On their way to Nepal she pulled out a photo of him and told him, “I have come all the way to marry you!” My anxious self could never! Salman replied saying that he has a girlfriend which Somy Ali couldn’t have cared less about. They finally dated when she turned 17. He said “I love you” without much convincing.

According to The Free Press Journal, Somy Ali has nothing but good things to say about Salman Khan and his family, “I learned a lot from his parents and household. I also learned from Salman. Ultimately, in any relationship, if you are not happy, it’s better to part ways. That was the case of the relationship between Salman and me. I decided to go back to America. What I learned from his parents is so phenomenal. They had an open house. Every day people would come and go. They would be loving and feed them. The door was never locked. Another pivotal lesson I learned is that we are all the same. They did not differentiate in religion at all. They never saw any difference in religion. It is very important to learn from them.” She further said, “Salman was a huge animal lover. He would pick up injured stray cats. He is generous. His foundation is doing phenomenal work. I commend him for that.”
It is rare for exes to still be able to be cordial despite their history. Especially if they have been together for as long as Salman Khan and Somy Ali were. Somy Ali said she never dated anyone after returning to America and focused on her education. She is happily single and has dedicated her life to her foundation called ‘No More Tears.’
