The ace director recalled that when he first narrated the story Gangubai Kathiawadi to Alia Bhatt to offer the title role, she took her bag and ran out of his office. The Black director added that he told Prerna Singh who is the CEO of Bhansali Productions that they have to look for another actress for the role after seeing Alia’s dramatic exit. “The first time she heard the narration, she took her bag and ran out of my office. She was wondering what on earth hit her and what kind of role I have offered to her. She just run away. I told my CEO Prerna, listen, I think we have to look out for another actor. Because this… Well, I wanted her to play it,” said filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali in an interview.

He mentioned that the next morning the Gully Boy actress called him because she wanted to meet him. Bhansali told her she doesn’t have to meet him to reject the offer. “I said you don’t have to come and meet me personally to say no to me,” he said and Alia started laughing.

In the film Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia Bhatt is playing the role of madam of a brothel of Kamathipura, the famous red light area in Mumbai. The film also features Ajay Devgn, Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa in important roles. It is all set to release in theatres on February 25, 2022.
