‘Ms Marvel’ Co-Creator Sana Amanat Says She Hopes South Asian Audience Feels Connected To Culture Because Of Show

Ms Marvel has risen to immense popularity and gone on to become one of the most-watched Marvel Cinematic Universe shows ever. The series’ protagonist is MCU’s first Muslim superheroine which in itself is a benchmark of inclusivity. The show is also lauded for its South Asian representation in terms of music, culture, language, fashion and so much more. I would not be wrong when I say that South Asian culture has not been represented on this scale before. Recently, the show’s co-creator Sana Amanat spoke about how Ms Marvel makes youth feel connected to it. She also talked about the negative reviews the series received initially and how the makers took it in their stride.

As per a report by NBC News, Sana Amanat said that she was not surprised about the negative reviews Ms Marvel received and also noticed how the same thing had happened when the comics were released in 2013. Sana said that the ones who gave bad reviews to the series feel that their identities are threatened while seeing a South Asian taking the spotlight. She also said that it is ‘okay’ that they do not relate to the protagonist or what is shown in the series but she only wishes people would not try to ‘put it down’.

Elaborating on the show’s diversity was its strength and it echoed with the right kind of audience, Sana Amanat also hopes that Ms Marvel provides a sense of competency that she did not have while growing up. She also went on to add that the audience feels connected to their culture and who they are, and this is very ‘important’.
