Lizzo Talks About Becoming The Representation She Wanted To See In Media In Powerful Emmy Speech
Yesterday (local time) was one of the biggest nights in the entertainment industry – it was the night when the Prime Time Emmy Awards 2022 took place. The award ceremony that bestowed some of the finest artists of entertainment took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. From Zendaya and Matthew Macfadyen to Jennifer Coolidge and Lizzo, many of these artists won big and took home trophies that celebrated them. Now, if there are trophies being handed out, then there are acceptance speeches being made. And out of all of the acceptance speeches I heard, the one given by Lizzo had my heart. It was emotional, relatable, and downright raw.
Lizzo won an Emmy award for her series Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls and to win that she beat the multi-year winner RuPaul’s Drag Race in the Outstanding Competition Program category. Needless to say, when she got on the stage to accept her award, she got teary-eyed and spoke candidly about how she always wanted to see someone like her on the screen when she was a kid.

In her acceptance speech, Lizzo started by thanking Emmys and the Emmy voters and admitted to the fact that she was extremely emotional at the moment. She said, “The trophy is nice but my emotion is for these people who are on this stage with me, the stories that they shared, they’re not that unique; they just don’t get the platform. Telling stories. Let’s just tell more stories.”

She then went on to share one of her stories about how when she was a little girl all she wanted to see was herself or someone like her in the media. The singer said, “Someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me. If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I’d be like, ‘You’re gonna see that person but b***h it’s going to have to be you.'”

Lizzo then goes on to call her “big girls” and talks about how one year ago all these women were filming a television show that would change their lives and now they are the Emmy-award-winning superstars that are going on a world tour with her. She concludes her speech by expressing her love for everyone – especially her father – and thanking everyone.
