UAE Bans Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ Over Scene That Shows Two Women Kissing. Ugh, Here We Go Again
If there is a movie that I’m eagerly waiting to watch, then it has to be Lightyear. And my excitement is doubled ever since I heard that there is a scene showing two female characters kissing each other. Yes, I’m a sucker for LGBTQ+ representation in movies. But not everyone is that accepting. Just take the example of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which banned the upcoming Pixar aminated movie, Lightyear, for showing a same-sex kiss scene. Yep, they really did that.
On Monday, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which is home to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, took to its official social media account to announce its decision of banning Pixar’s Lightyear since it shows a same-sex kiss scene. The Emirates announced its decision to ban the movie through its Media Regulatory Office of the country’s Ministry of Youth and Culture.

The UAE office in the tweet said, Lightyear “is not licensed for public screening in all cinemas in the UAE, due to its violation of the country’s media standard… The office confirms that all films screened in cinemas across the country are subject to follow-up and evaluation before the date of screening to the public, to ensure the safety of the circulated content according to the appropriate age classification.”
The office did not further elaborate on why Pixar’s animated movie was being banned. However, their tweet did include a picture of the film’s poster with the profile image of its main character Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans) with a “no” symbol over it in red. So, it seems as though the movie won’t be hitting the theatres in UAE on Thursday. Even after movie theatres, a federation of seven sheikhdoms on the Arabian Peninsula had already given out advertisements of the show timings for the film.

For those unversed, Pixar’s upcoming animated movie reportedly has a scene that shows a character (voiced by Uzo Aduba) kissing another woman with whom she is in a relationship. And so it really doesn’t come as a surprise that UAE, a nation that criminalises same-sex relationships banned the movie.
