Iranian Actresses Mandana Karimi, Elnaaz Norouzi Talk About Iran Hijab Row, Say It Triggers Trauma And Anxiety

The last few days have been rather taxing for all of us women, especially with the Iran Hijab row. A few days ago, a 22-year -old Mahsa Amini died in custody after being arrested as her hair came out of her hijab. Soon after, protests broke out in the country. Iranian women are protesting against the inhumane behaviour and the hijab rules in the country. Even amid the protests, a young woman was shot 6 times on her face and neck as she was preparing to go for the anti-Hijab protest. And now Iranian actresses, Mandana Karimi and Elnaaz Norouzi have spoken up about the situation in Iran as well as about women’s rights in the country.

Actress Elnaaz Norouzi spoke about how staying out of contact with her family amid the ongoing protests makes her extremely anxious while adding that she wishes to use her voice and platform to garner attention towards the oppression of women in Iran. Calling the situation in Iran a “human rights violation”, the actress said that the Internet has been cut off in the country making it difficult for her to communicate with her family. The Sacred Games actress revealed that she reads the news and watches the viral videos of the protests and the incidents in the country every morning and cries all day. Sharing that she spends her time checking in on what is happening in her country and prays for better days while sharing the news on social media hoping to raise awareness. Recounting an incident, Elnaaz revealed that she was once taken to a detention centre as her ankles were visible in her pants.

On the other hand, actress Mandana Karimi spoke about the struggles of being an Iranian woman. Sharing that when she left the country she didn’t have much money and did not even know any language other than Farsi, the actress said that she left because she knew that she did not want to live there. Speaking further, Mandana revealed that she couldn’t live in a country where she did not have the freedom to step out as and when she wanted or hang out with whoever she wanted or study or dress as per her choice due to the “morality police”. The actress revealed that she has lost count of how many times she was arrested and had to pay the police to get out. She also recalled incidents when she was arrested and has to spend 2 nights in jail.

Talking about the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, Mandana Karimi said that though she died, the other Iranian women including her were triggered by it and had to relive their trauma. She also said the same thing as Elnaaz Norouzi and revealed that she too hasn’t been able to connect with her family due to the current situation due to which the internet has been cut off and the phone connection in the country is just bad. Diving deeper into the issue, the actress said that the anti-Hijab protests are a fight for human rights and women’s equality. Mandana said that as women they’re asking for their right to wear what they want without being killed or abused for it while adding that wearing or not wearing the hijab should be a woman’s choice and no one else’s. She also urged people to raise awareness and support Iranian women by supporting the hashtags online and re-sharing news.

Well, in all honesty, women’s human rights are being gravely violated in Iran currently. No woman should be killed for wearing her choice of clothes. The inhumane treatment of women in the country is completely and absolutely unacceptable and should be called out. And we as empowered and privileged women should do our bit to help the Iranian women as they fight for their rights.
