From ‘Ms Marvel’ To ‘Thor: Love And Thunder’, Female Superhero Films And Series To Watch For An Ass-Kicking Time!

For a long long time, the superhero genre has been dominated by men but it looks like the age of male domination is over and it’s time for some gender equality in this genre. It took Marvel and DC a really long time to serve us some piping hot standalone female superheroes films and series but it’s a job well done. Women are no longer just arm candies or romantic interests for male superheroes and have stories of their own. And what’s there to not like about female superheroes? With the rise of female superheroes, several streaming platforms have some amazing content for y’all to catch. Here’s a list of female superhero films and series for you to binge on.

1. Ms Marvel (Disney+ Hotstar)

This American miniseries written by Bisha K. Ali is based on the Marvel Comics character Kamala Khan aka Ms Marvel (played by Iman Vellani). It follows the story of Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakistani girl, who discovers her superpowers and adopts Captain Marvel’s (Carol Danvers) old name Ms Marvel. It is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

2. Thor: Love And Thunder (Theatres)

Releasing on July 7, this superhero film is based on the Marvel Comics character Thor. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Waititi, Russell Crowe, and Natalie Portman. This film will witness the rise of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) as Mighty Thor. This film will release in the theatres on July 7.

3. The Boys (Amazon Prime Video)

Developed by Eric Kripe, this series is loosely based on a comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. This comic was originally published by DC Comics under the Wildstorm imprint but was later moved to Dynamite Entertainment. It follows the story of a team of vigilantes as they fight people with superpowers who abuse their abilities. This series has 2 female superheroes namely Annie January aka Starlight, played by Erin Moriarty and Maggie Shaw aka Queen Maeve, played by Dominique. The Boys is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

4. Harley Quinn

This animated black comedy superhero television series is based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It follows the misadventures of Harley Quinn and her best friend Poison Ivy after her breakup with Joker. Not only does this animated series focus on Ivy and Harley’s friendship but it also explores their romantic relationship.

5. Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness (Disney+ Hotstar)

This film is a sequel to the 2016 film Doctor Strange and is based on a Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is directed by Sam Raimi and produced by Marvel Studios. Though this film is all about Doctor Strange it also has two female superheroes – Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch and America Chavez, played by Elizabeth Olsen and Xochiti Gomez respectively. You can watch this film on Disney+ Hotstar.

6. Watchmen (Disney+ Hotstar)

This is a superhero limited series based on the 1986 DC Comics series of the same name. It stars Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Andrew Howard, Jacob Ming-Trent, Tom Mison, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Louis Gossett Jr. and Jeremy Irons. The later episodes also had Jean Smart and Hong Chau. Regina King plays the role of Angela Abar aka Sister Night, a Tulsa Police detective who wears a nun’s attire and balaclava. Jean Smart plays Laurie Blake, who was earlier the second Silk Spectre but has not become an FBI agent and a member of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. This series is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

7. The Old Guard (Netflix)

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, this superhero film is based on a comic book of the same name. It stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It follows the story of a group of immortal mercenaries on a revenge mission. Charlize Theron plays Andy aka Andromache of Scythia, who is the oldest immortal and the leader of the group of mercenaries. KiKi Layne plays Nile Freeman who is a US Marine who serves in Afghanistan. It is available for streaming on Netflix.

8. Wonder Woman (Netflix)

This 2017 film is based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by Warner Bros Pictures, Atlas Entertainment and Cruel and Unusual Films, this is the first film of the Wonder Woman trilogy. It stars Gal Gadon in the titular role alongside Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen and Elena Anaya. It is currently streaming on Netflix.
