I feel like the older I grew, the more I started preferring the term “partner” over boyfriend/girlfriend. I felt like having a term that refers to someone I am romantically involved with as an equal made me feel more comfortable as a woman. And as much as we all ideally like to believe that romantic relationships automatically mean that there is true equality between a couple, unfortunately, that is not untrue. However, Shruti Haasan has spoken about her relationship on the first episode of The Male Feminist with host Siddhaarth Aalambayan and its feministic nature. We want this too!

When Siddhaarth Aalambayan spoke about Shruti’s words, “a partnership can also be an exchange of ideas.” Referring to her partner, Santanu Hazarika, Shruti said that the most wonderful thing about her relationship with him is that she stopped fighting ad stopped having to prove herself. She said that there was no question whether there was equality in their relationship; which is such an amazing thing! She continues to say that being an equal isn’t even a question to Santanu and is natural to him. Shruti adds that Santanu is not a loud feminist who makes supporting his woman a public statement. Rather than this, he tries his best to find ways to support her as a feminist himself.

While it might be something obvious to many that a romantic relationship between a man and a woman, unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. I have more than enough anecdotes to prove that many men even from our generation tend to look down upon the woman they are with or believe that should have more freedom and authority within the relationship as compared to their female partners. It is refreshing to see Shruti Haasan and Santanu Hazarika’s healthy and truly feministic relationship and we hope that more people can take after their example.
