‘Darlings’ Trailer: Alia Bhatt Kidnaps Her Own Husband In This Dark Comedy And He Might Just Deserve It

Say what you want but the truth is that Alia Bhatt is hands down one of the most talented and versatile actors in the industry right now. She has been giving back-to-back hits and her growth as an actor can easily be seen in her career graph. And if you ask me, I’d say this year is as much her as it is Ranbir Kapoor’s. After kick-starting the year with a banging performance in Gangubai Kathiawadi, the actor already has two other movies in the pipeline – Darlings and Brahmastra. Yep, and while the excitement around the latter has not curbed, fans are excited to see her upcoming movie that marks her debut as a producer. And now that the Darlings trailer is out, I can say with certainty that this dark comedy is as intriguing as it comes.

On July 25, Alia Bhatt took to her Instagram to drop the trailer of Darlings starring Vijay Varma, Shefali Shah, and Roshan Matthew and it is everything you would expect from a dark comedy genre. Having watched the trailer, I can say with full confidence that this one is going to be hilarious and intense at the same time.

The Darlings trailer opens with Vijay Varma introducing himself as Hamza Shaik and stating that he is the husband of Badrunissa Shaikh (played by Alia Bhatt) and that he loves his wife but is leaving her. Later on, we see a bruised Badrunissa Shaikh and her mother (played by Shefali Shah) going to file a missing person report to the police. The trailer goes on to reveal that it is the wife that has kidnapped Hamza and is set to take revenge for all the abuse he has served her in so many years of marriage. She says she’s done playing defence and it is time to play offence now. And it is her mother who is helping her take revenge along with Zulfi (played by Roshan Matthew).

From the looks of the Darlings trailer, it seems as though this dark comedy starring Alia Bhatt as the lead highlights how the frustration of being a domestic abuse victim forces the woman to take things into her own hands and how ruthless a she can be when she is supported by another woman.

Speaking about her first film as a producer, Alia Bhatt said, “Darlings is special, the moment I read the script, I wanted to be a part of the film not only as an actor but to place a larger role in bringing such unique stories to the viewers. I can’t hold back my excitement as we unveil the hard work of some amazing co-actors, partner producers and Jasmeet. It’s an engaging tale that we all can’t wait to bring you through Netflix.”

Darlings directed by Jasmeet K Reen and produced by Gauri Khan, Alia Bhatt, and Gaurav Verma is set to release on Netflix on August 5.
