‘Chakda ‘Xpress’ Teaser: Anushka Sharma Is Jhulan Goswami, Former, Indian Women’s Cricket Caption In This First Look

One of the actors of the Bollywood industry that I truly respect and like is hands-down Anushka Sharma. She is the one actress in recent times that have taken varied projects, done justice to them, and not be afraid to fail. She’s taken risks throughout her career with her film choices both as an actor and a producer too. I love that about her. But after her last film Zero in 2018, Anushka Sharma had chosen to go on a break and focus on herself and her personal life. And now, all her fans (including me) are ecstatic to know that she’s back with a new project after 3 years! Yep, Anushka Sharma took to her Instagram to share a glimpse at her new project, a cricket biopic called Chakda ‘Xpress, inspired by the life of former Indian women’s cricket captain, Jhulan Goswami.

Anushka Sharma took to her social media accounts where she shared the teaser of her Netflix project called Chakda ‘Xpress wherein she plays the role of Jhulan Goswami, former Indian women’s cricket captain. In her post, she writes how this is a special film for her since it tells a story about a woman who chose sports and made India proud on the global stage at a time when women weren’t allowed to even think about sports.

Sharing the teaser of Netflix’s Chakda ‘Xpress, Anushka Sharma wrote, “From support systems, to facilities, to having a stable income from playing the game, to even having a future in cricket – very little propelled women of India to take up cricket as a profession. Jhulan had a fighting and extremely uncertain cricketing career and she stayed motivated to make her country proud. She strived to change the stereotype that women can’t make a career out of playing cricket in India so that the next generation of girls had a better playing field. Her life is a living testimony that passion and perseverance triumphs over any or all adversities and Chakda Xpress is the most definitive look into the not so rosy world of women’s cricket back then.”

In fact, in her post, the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil actress acknowledges that a lot of work still needs to be done with regards to Indian women’s cricket even now and that we need to provide the women’s team with the best of everything so that they can flourish and make India proud.

Having watched the Chakda ‘Xpress teaser, the one thing that took me by surprise was not just how different Anushka Sharma looked but also her accent. In the teaser, Anushka has a peculiar Bengali accent that makes her portrayal of Jhulan Goswami even more authentic. I am pretty sure there are going to be divisive opinions on the look and her accent, and the fact that a Bengali actress could’ve been cast, who could’ve done the accent more justice. However, that doesn’t take away from the curiosity that I, and surely everyone else, have about how this one turns out. Moreover, I did notice replies to Anushka’s Twitter announcement that remarked how we’ve had enough Bollywood movies about cricket. But well, I blame you, country, for giving the sport such undivided attention in the first place.

We fans have waited so long for Anushka Sharma to come back to the big screen and while she may not exactly be on the big screen, because streaming and this neverending COVID sequels we keep getting, I’m just glad that we’ll get to see her creating her magic at the movies anyway.
