‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ Is Coming On OTT. 5 Reasons To Watch It If You Haven’t Already

I’ll be honest, I’m a hardcore Sanjay Leela Bhansali fan and his Alia Bhatt starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi was one of the most anticipated films (and for good reason, trust me). The first thing I did after watching the teaser of the film was to order my copy of Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens Of Mumbai, the book this film is based on. I couldn’t help but want to know more about Gangubai and her life. And I managed to watch the film in the first week of its release. But not all of us were lucky enough to manage that and that’s why I got some good news for you folks. This blockbuster film is all set to release on the OTT platform Netflix on April 26. Guess the chaand is really here!

1. Alia Bhatt’s New Avatar

We’ve known Alia Bhatt to be a bubbly, girl-next-door kind of actress but she has managed to break that barrier by turning into a Bhansali girl. The actress walked into uncharted territory with her looks and character in this film. She perfectly portrayed Gangubai and her journey from an innocent girl to a sex worker to the fearless madam of a brothel, Gangubai Kathiawadi. To say that she shined in this film would really be an understatement. And let’s not forget the stellar cast featuring Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, Jim Sarbh and Seema Pahwa.

2. Bhansali World

I kid you not, Sanjay Leela Bhansali fandom is real. This filmmaker has time and again created magic on the big screen and given us some of the most amazing stories. And he managed to take it up a notch with Gangubai Kathiawadi. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s work in this film will captivate you and the storytelling is truly spectacular. If Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, Devdas and other films weren’t proof enough, this one should be. The filmmaker has outdone himself in the SLB world once again!

3. The Story

Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai which has a story based on the life of a woman, a social activist, sex worker and madam of a brothel in the Kamathipura area of Mumbai during the 1960s, Gangubai Harjeevandas aka Gangubai Kothewali aka Gangubai Kathiyawadi. There’s no denying the fact that sex workers do not receive the most humane treatment and their plight has been highlighted on several occasions and while most of it falls on deaf ears, Gangubai not only experienced it but also fought for the women and their fundamental rights. It’s not just a story of a sex worker and her rise to power but also a story of women’s empowerment.

4. The Dialogues

The way Alia Bhatt has managed to master the accent is truly praise-worthy and the icing on the cake is the kickass dialogues in this film. Not only are they hard-hitting but some of them have a punchline that will make you laugh while making you question the social evils. TBH, Gangu is badass AF and her dialogues make it all the better. She did say, “Kunwari apne choda nahi, Shrimati kisi ne banaya nahi.” Gangu really is the chaand of the Bhansali world and her dialogues are meme-worthy content.
