Alia Bhatt’s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ Lands In Legal Trouble Yet Again, MLA Amin Patel Moves Court Against Use Of ‘Kamathipura’
Films and controversies go hand in hand. And this time stealing the spotlight is Alia Bhatt’s upcoming release Gangubai Kathiawadi. While the film ever since its trailer launch has garnered a positive response, a certain section is not so happy with the narrative. According to the recent report, Congress MLA Amin Patel along with Kamathipura residents have moved courts and filed pleas in the Bombay High Court about the portrayal of some parts of the film. It all happened on Tuesday, when Congress MLA from Mumbadevi, Mumbai–Amin Patel filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court against the release of the film. Tweeting which he also mentioned about his meeting with Amit Vilasrao Deshmukh, the Minister for Cultural Affairs in Maharashtra with regard to a memorandum, that highlighted objections concerning the release of the trailer of Gangubai Kathiawadi. He further mentioned how the film “maligns the image of Kamathipura locality and Kathiawadi community.” The petition filed by Shraddha Surve also mentioned “If the movie is allowed to be released with the name Kamathipura, then it would cause harm and disrespect to the residents, especially women,” since “not even five per cent of the Kamathipura area is active in prostitution”.

His plea is likely to be heard today by a single member bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta. This definitely isn’t the first time that the film landed in trouble. It earlier was accused of showing ‘Kamathipura’ in a bad light by the residents of the region. Moreover, Gangubai’s purported adopted son Babu Raoji Shah and her granddaughter Bharti spoke about the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial projecting Gangubai’s character as a sex worker.
