Delhi School Students Develop An App That Connects People To Tailors, Get Government Funding

Home to one-fifth of the world’s youth, the need to nurture this young population, is what India needs to focus on. Giving a platform to such young minds, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led government has weaved a unique start-up based show titled Business Blasters. Paving the way for fresh and promising ideas, the programme aims to groom young talent and student entrepreneurs. Followed by the programme launched under the ‘entrepreneurship mindset curriculum’ at the school level, the students of Sarvodaya Co-ed Senior Secondary school in Moti Bagh came up with unique ideas in order to receive good business investment in the fourth episode of the show.
Developing a tailor service app named Silai Mitr, the ten-member group was offered financial support by the Delhi government to execute the idea. A customer-service based application, the platform bridges the gap between tailors and customers in the same locality. Similar to a shopping application, where the users can have a look at the variety of designs and attached price range, the easy to shop application also helps with a well-managed fitting service besides picking and dropping facility by the Silai Mitr team.

Presenting their ideas to a jury panel including Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Tod Fod Jod co-founder Neeraj Gulati and Suta co-founder Taniya Biswas, Gulnaaz one of the team members shared, “Our main focus is women …We have kept the prices low so that it is affordable for all and they avail this service at their doorstep. Our team has done a market survey which was responded to by 600 people. Out of 600 people, there were 38 per cent people who were saying that they do not find a tailor even in one km of the distance.”
Adding to which Afifa (team member) mentioned, “I attempted to reach out to established tailors during a festive season who could stitch the dress on time. I could not find any. So, I came across a home-maker who was skilled in stitching but was not in the market as she did not have resources and was not tech-savvy. This idea then struck my mind as to how can I help her.”
With an idea to expand their platform and explore further into designing school uniforms, the team received a total sum of Rs. 20,000 seed money from the Delhi government. The ten-member team has a well-structured workflow with assigned duties of finance, marketing and customer service. Filling the market gap through the initiative and helping generate work opportunities for homemakers who wish to work, the idea was applauded by the judges followed by a cash price of Rs 75,000 and mentoring regarding app and testing offered by Suta co-founder.
