#WorldMusicDay: Celebrate By Listening To These 6 Classic Tracks!

June 21, 2016 | by Sanjana Subramanian

The very first World Music Day was celebrated in Paris, way back in 1982. Popularly known as La Fete De La Musique, today marks the celebration of music of every kind. And why not? Music is the force that unites people and emotions. It is something that can bring out the best in every person and something that we simply can’t do without.

Can you imagine a day without listening to your favourite songs? I survive on music, be it my regular playlist while travelling to work or my favourite relaxing numbers that I listen to before bed. Celebrating music then is a great idea. Today, over 700 cities have begun to celebrate World Music Day!

You already know how we update you with the latest tracks in our weekly feature Haute Sounds, but today, we’d like to do something different. This World Music Day, we’d like to rewind to the good old classics. From the King Of Pop to the evergreen Elvis Presley, here are some musical legends whose soulful compositions continue to live on, regardless of time. These songs are largely considered their most popular tracks of all time.

1. The Beatles

The most famous band of the 60s and 70s, the Beatles continue to live on through their music even today. Did you know that the band members were in their teens when they first came together? The Beatles went on to become pop culture icons across the world, with their signature images being reproduced as much as possible. That legacy continues even today. Go on and listen to the Beatles’ much-loved number, Hey Jude.

2. Michael Jackson

Here’s my personal favourite! The King of Pop was a performer who was a cut above the rest, and his music always makes you want to dance. Whether it is the infamous Thriller or the foot-tapping Beat It, his songs have always struck a chord with listeners.
Let’s remember MJ today, with Billie Jean.

3. Eagles

American rock band Eagles happen to be one of the most best-selling bands of all time. Not surprising. Who can ever forget Hotel California? Their songs have often been described as belonging to the genre of California Rock. Although the band has only recently disbanded, we’re pretty sure their songs will continue to entertain people for many years to come. World Music Day would be sort of incomplete without listening to Hotel California at least once!

4. Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley, the King Of Rock & Roll, was a true legend. He came from humble beginnings and went on to make a name for himself across the globe. He was every woman’s heartthrob and every man’s idol. While his death devastated millions of fans, we’re glad we have a vast collection of his songs to listen to even today. From Heartbreak Hotel to Goodluck Charm, his songs are vivacious and extremely beautiful. Here’s remembering the King Of Rock & Roll, with his great hit, Jailhouse Rock.

5. Pink Floyd

This English rock band was well-known for its psychedelic sound that inspired generations of musicians. Also a pop culture sensation, Pink Floyd first became popular in the underground music scene of London. They slowly built a path to the top and managed to stay there for a long time. The band has been inducted into the US and the UK Rock ‘n Roll Hall Of Fame for their contribution music. Let’s rewind with Pink Floyd with one of their popular hits, Comfortably Numb.

6. David Bowie

This list would be incomplete without the late great David Bowie. He sparked off a trend of creative music paired with great visuals that even critics couldn’t ignore or not applaud! He was deeply influenced by Elvis Presley’s music and started to play the piano soon after listening to his compositions. David Bowie died early this year, which is also one of the reasons why we would like to remember him today. Lose yourself to one of Bowie’s finest, Space Oddity.
