#BoycottAliaBhatt Trends On Twitter, Tweeple Say ‘Darlings’ Promotes Domestic Violence Against Men. Ye Chal Kya Raha Hai?

Kuch Bhi!

After trending the hashtag for boycotting the film Raksha Bandhan on Twitter, now the netizens have shifted their attention to Alia Bhatt’s upcoming release Darlings. The trailer of the film was released on July 25, and it was hailed by the viewers for showcasing a very off-beat story. Along with Alia, the movie also features Shefali Shah, Vijay Verma, and Roshan Mathew. The film is all set to release on August 5, but just a day before its release, Twitter users have made the film caught up in a new kind of controversy, to the extent the boycott of Alia Bhatt is currently trending on Twitter. The users went ahead and called Alia the Amber Heard of India and accused her of making fun of male abuse.

For the unversed, Darlings is a dark comedy movie, which shows the story of Alia’s character Badrunissa Shaikh kidnapping her own husband, played by Vijay Verma. Alia’s character is shown as a victim of domestic abuse who in order to take revenge for her sufferings, kidnaps her husband and tortures her while simultaneously acting very innocent in front of the police. Shefali Shah plays the role of  Badrunissa Shaikh’s mother who is also an accomplice in this act. Also, Darlings will mark Alia Bhatt’s debut as a producer.

Now, when the trailer of Darlings was released, the entire take on it in the form of dark humour was quite appreciated by the audience but now the dialogues around it have completely changed. Twitterati is now calling out Alia Bhatt for glorifying male abuse in this movie and she is being blamed for promoting domestic violence against men.

One of the Twitter users wrote that in India approximately 3.5 crore men are victims of domestic violence and further questions why is this being normalised through the film and also being mocked.

One of the users went ahead to compare her with Amber Heard and wrote that she is promoting and making fun of male abuse.

The users made appeals through their tweets to people to stop watching such “mindless” films.

Why did this suddenly happen just a day before the release when the trailer was already out some time back? Anyways, if a movie showcases something, there is always a context to it which can only be known when one watches the whole film. Just because a movie portrays the abuse against a man in no way shows that it is promoting it, it is just fiction that is trying to reflect certain things that take place in our society.
