In terms of women’s safety, our country is not really doing very well. Crimes against women are on the rise, eve-teasing and molestation have become an everyday reality for women in major parts of the country. And now, I was shocked to know about the Gedi Culture in Chandigarh, a common practice to make the girls even more uncomfortable. On the latest Hauterrfly’s 2 AM Stories, host Alisha set out to explore this very prevalent culture of the city and also gave us an insight into how the women feel about it.
The Gedi Culture is basically boys of Chandigarh heading out in their expensive cars to take a round of lanes where there are girls’ hostels or colleges. Yes, surprising right? But, the 2 AM Stories on Chandigarh showed us how normal this practice was for men in that city. In fact, they also called it a real-life Tinder. One of the boys said that people might go wrong or be mistaken about a girl on Tinder but they cannot with the Gedi culture. The host interacted with many boys and girls on this episode to know more about their opinions on the Gedi Culture. During this interaction, one boy also said that this practice helps them find a suitable girlfriend and partner for them, hunh!
Well, as per the girls, this culture just made them feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Giving the host a deeper understanding of the culture, a girl said that it was a regular practice for boys to roam around areas where there were many girls. They also randomly start conversations with them making them feel weird and uncomfortable. One woman revealed that many times Gedi culture also leads to eve-teasing and boys misbehaving.

This episode also showed that as a city, Chandigarh was safe for girls. However, this Gedi Culture did come out as a very planned way of stalking girls. I mean, boys knowing about the exact in and out timings of a girls’ hostel and accordingly roaming around that area, does not really sound safe, right? I wonder, how the police also take this culture so lightly!
