Scrubs Vs Peels: The Best Exfoliators For Your Skin Type

Scrubs Vs Peels: The Best Exfoliators For Your Skin Type

Exfoliation is necessary, there is no two ways about it. A sworn part of their skincare regime, several celebrities including Emma Stone and Cate Blanchett feel that exfoliating your skin is the ideal way to get that baby-soft glow. For those who are still unclear about what it is — exfoliation is ideally scrubbing off and cleansing your skin with an abrasive or a non-abrasive product, which gently removes your dead skin. The point of exfoliation is to remove all the dead skin, dirt, and imperfections, leaving a soft glow. We are all aware of what exfoliation is; however, not many of us know the various kinds and how each suits particular skin types.

PHYSICAL VS CHEMICAL

For those who are still grasping the basics of skincare, you may know of the ‘scrub’ and its properties that leave your face feeling like a baby’s bottom. That is one kind of exfoliator — you know, the kind that your mum or grandmum tells you to use twice a week in order to remove that tan (yes, we’ve all been there). However, there is also a second kind of exfoliant that you probably didn’t know of. The silent killer of the exfoliation world, the chemical peels!

Let’s break this down for you in simple terms. Scrubs are known as physical exfoliators, which consist of rough little bits which buff away that cringe-worthy layer of your dead skin cells (ewww!). On the other hand, chemical exfoliators consist of AHAs and BHAs which dissolve away those skin cells and grime slowly.

WHICH ONE IS SUITED FOR YOUR SKIN?

For oily skin with severe breakouts

Chemical exfoliators, such as glycolic or salicylic acid, work well for skin that’s oily and tends to breakout more. You can also use a face scrub that accommodates gentle round beads — just remember to not use both on the same day — twice a week for the scrub and 3 times for the chemical exfoliator.

For oily skin that tends to get sensitive

Use glycolic acid in order to combat your breakouts without drying your skin out. Stay away from any harsh products that will replenish and produce excess oil. You can also use a physical scrub with small plastic beads — just don’t use both exfoliants together.

For normal skin that tends to get sensitive

Exfoliants that calm the skin while exfoliating are essential for people with sensitive skin, hence chemical exfoliants need to be your go-to, to buff away those dead skin cells. Stick to lactic acid 3 times a week, if your skin is very sensitive.

For dry skin that tends to get sensitive

Use a chemical exfoliator that contains rick oils that soothe the skin — remember not to over-exfoliate and to stick to a 3-times-a-week regime only.

For skin that requires anti-ageing

Use higher concentration of alpha-hydroxy acids and peptides to exfoliate and tighten the skin — this boosts your cell regeneration.
