#AskHauterfly: How To Get Rid Of Dandruff?

An itchy, flaky scalp making you doubt that little black dress? Yep, dandruff can be a biatch, not only to your scalp, but to those trusty ol’ black clothes too. If your shoulders look like they’ve just walked out of a snow storm, then it’s time you buck up and do something about it.

One of the main causes of dandruff is when fungus Malassezia (gross, I know) ends up growing on your scalp (doesn’t paint a pretty picture, does it?), causing your scalp to shed. Literally. Shed. This could be either thanks to an overly dry scalp or a crazy-ass oily scalp.

Getting rid of dandruff isn’t quite an instant process; you need to make sure your scalp is taken care of and nourished over a period of time. If you want results, you do need to be patient. So what can you do? We’ve put 3 homemade hair mask recipes that will rescue that scalp and give your hair the nutrients it needs.

1. NEEM & OLIVE OIL

Crush a couple of dried neem leaves in a bowl and mix it into a paste with olive oil. Apply the thick paste on to your scalp and leave it on for about an hour. You can wrap your hair up in a shower cap to avoid any drips. Wash it off with your normal shampoo and apply conditioner, midway to the tips of your hair.

WHY: Basically, neem has antibacterial properties that kills that pesky fungus growing in your hair.

2. BANANA & APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

Peel a banana and mush it to a pulp in a tumbler. Pour in some apple cider vinegar and whisk till it becomes a viscous paste. Apply the paste to your hair, especially massaging it into the scalp. Make sure your roots are completely coated with the mixture. Leave on for 20 minutes and wash.

WHY: Bananas are your go-to source for Vitamin B and its nutrients help improve your blood circulation, keeping your scalp healthy. The apple cider vinegar kills those germs.

3. CITRUS PACK

Take a few dried orange peels and crush them, along with approximately 6 tablespoons of lemon juice. Blend it in a mixer and make a thick paste of the ingredients. Apply it to your scalp, leave it in for about 30 minutes, and wash it off with shampoo.

WHY: The orange peels have acidic properties that help deal with an oily scalp, thus conditioning it. This gets rid off the dandruff that settles in the scalp.
