Are You Oiling Your Hair The Right Way? Here Are 5 Hair Oiling Mistakes To Avoid

I hate oiling my hair but it’s really one of the most important things to do for our hair. As much as I hate it, I cannot stress enough how important it is. Apart from the usual hair spa, shampooing and conditioning, our hair needs some nutrition which it gets from oil. Oiling has several benefits. It promotes hair growth, adds shine, lustre and softness to our hair and strengthens it as well. But most of us, unknowingly, make little mistakes after oiling our hair that can do immense damage. And in order to reap the maximum benefits of oiling, we need to do it right and avoid making mistakes. So, here are some hair oiling mistakes to avoid.

1. Say No To Combing!

Most of us tend to comb our hair after oiling them to remove the knots and untangle it but this is the one thing that you must avoid doing. Hair oiling and massage relaxes our scalp and makes our hair more fragile and prone to breakage. Combing your hair at this time can lead to breakage and hair loss. It’s best to avoid this.

2. Don’t Tie Your Hair

Hair oiling and massage make our hair more vulnerable to breakage as our scalp is relaxed. Most of us tie our hair up in a bun or braid it after oiling but doing this can weaken the roots and lead to breakage. It’s best to leave your hair open after oiling and if you do have to tie it, tie it in a loose ponytail or braid or just use a hair clutcher.

3. Overnight Champi Is Not A Good Idea

It’s a common practice to apply oil on our hair and keep it overnight but this is one of the biggest hair oiling mistakes. It may seem like a great way to allow your hair to soak in the nutrition but the fact is that this makes your scalp greasy. It also allows all the dirt and germs from your pillow and bed to stick to your hair and scalp and mix up with the natural oil and cause scalp problems.

4. Don’t Overdo It!

Most of us who have a dry scalp tend to apply too much oil but excessive oil is not good for your hair or your scalp. There’s nothing wrong with applying oil properly but too much oil will force you to apply too much shampoo which in turn will rob your hair of its natural oil and moisture. Apart from this, massaging your scalp too much is not good either. This can make your hair tangle up and lead to breaking and also weaken the roots. Massage softly and slowly.

5. Hot Oil Is A No-No!

Many of us apply hot oil to our hair and while that’s not a bad thing, it’s not good to heat the oil too much. This not only neutralises the oil but it also damages your hair and scalp. Try to use lukewarm oil for your hair.
