The model and founder of Rhode skincare made the headlines after she shared a video of a lip gloss hack where she used a brown lip liner to line your lips and smudge it in and top it off with some lip gloss. She called it the “Brownie Glazed Lip”. This hack seemed like an attempt to recreate the impact that her “Glazed Donut Nails” did but instead, it led to a severe social media backlash.

Why Did Hailey Bieber Recieve Social Media Backlash Over The ‘Brownie Glazed Lip’?
The model and skincare brand owner was attacked by social media users for sharing the lip hack and giving it a new name when it is in fact a technique that has been used by women of colour ever since the 90s. Several social media users called out Hailey Bieber for rebranding a trend that has been around and calling it her own but truth be told, the model never said that she invented it. Social media users simply assumed that she did because she has been known to kickstart new trends and share new beauty hacks every now and then, making people assume that her ‘Brownie Glazed Lip’ was another one.

Women of colour from across the globe are taking to social media to slam the trend as well as Hailey Bieber because they have been rocking this trend for forever. Women of colour, mainly Black and Brown women have revealed that they have been using this hack to create nude lip colours because of the lack of nude shades for dark skin tones in the market back in the day. While we don’t think Hailey deserves this kind of backlash, we also understand where the women of colour come from. TBH, Hailey Bieber never claimed it to be her own invention but we also understand that the model has made no efforts to offer clarification or give credit to the OG inspiration of her lip hack. But at the same time, we should be thankful she did this because it has kickstarted an essential conversation that has not been touched upon for the longest time.

This controversy has stirred up a conversation about how the hacks and techniques used by women of colour are often shamed unless a white woman claims it for herself and then it suddenly becomes a huge trend. Women of colour have been sharing that they have been labelled ‘ghetto’ and shamed for their ‘Brownie Glazed Lip’ but Hailey Bieber does it and suddenly everyone is in love with this ‘new’ trend which is now deemed “classy and elegant”. And let’s be honest, this has happened to us Indian women too.
