Study Reveals, Usage Of Chemical Hair Straightening Products Could Increase The Risk Of Uterine Cancer In Women

As women, we love our hair and we spend so much time caring for our tresses and styling them. From using the most expensive products to going to the best possible salon to using grandma-approved home remedies, we do anything and everything to keep our hair looking lustrous. But you know the one thing that’s most common? Hair straightening. Managing curly hair is no cakewalk and that’s probably why a large number of women choose to get their hair chemically straightened. But did you know, chemical hair straightening products increase the risk of women developing uterine cancer as compared to women who do not use such products?

As per a recent study conducted by the US Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, researchers found that while usage of hair products like hair dyes, bleach, highlights and perms have no association with uterine cancer in women but the usage of chemical hair straightening products can increase the risk of the same in women. The study was aimed at identifying the risk factors for breast cancer and other health conditions in women. For the purpose of the study 33,497 women in the US between the ages of 35 to 74 years were followed for nearly 11 years and a total of 378 were diagnosed with uterine cancer. According to the study, women who used hair straightening products more than 4 times in the previous year were more likely to develop uterine cancer as opposed to those who did not. At the same time, the study also found that 1.64% of women who did not use hair straightening products were still at risk of developing uterine cancer by the age of 70 but the risk increased to 4.05% in those who used the products. Considering the fact that uterine cancer is relatively rare, this is rather concerning. As of now, uterine cancer accounts for only 3% of the new cancer cases in the US but it’s also one of the most common types of cancer in the female reproductive system.

Well, you know what this means for women, right? We cannot be using too many chemical hair straightening products and we cannot use them too much. Having said that, it’s also important to note that most chemical hair straightening products have ingredients like parabens, bisphenol A, metals as well as formaldehyde that could be the cause of the increased risk of developing uterine cancer. It’s also essential to note that these products don’t just affect our hair but are often absorbed by the scalp during usage. This means that we, women, need to pick our hair care products with much more care.
