In Maharashtra, 14-Year-Old Sahrish Kanwal Made DSP For A Day Ahead Of Women’s Day. It’s A Start

Growing up, if there was one movie that we as a family would always be up for watching a 100 times over, considering cable networks back then only had a limited number of movies with them which they would play on repeat, it would have been the Amrish Puri and Anil Kapoor starrer Nayak. The movie that got famous for its interesting and never seen before political concept of making a Chief Minister out of an ordinary man, was a hit in theatres, had us intrigued because of many reasons – impeccable acting, scripting, being unique and giving us all a hope that this might happen some day and save us from our impending doom. And while that was all good and rosy in the movie hall, we knew this could never manifest in reality. But seems like we may have been wrong, for a 14-year0old girl from Malkapur has been made the DSP of Maharashtra’s Buldhana district for a day!

Rhe Maharashtra police officials have decided upon this ahead of international women’s day. The entire concept, that was suggested by the Buldhana collector Suman Chandra, is to go on for a week until women’s day and seeks to embolden and empower women from a tender age and giving them an understanding the administration’s functioning.

Sahrish Kanwal, from the Zilla Parishad Urdu High School, Malkapur tehsil was the first 14-year-old to take up the position of District Superintendent of Police in the Maharashtrian district and sought to resolve cases that were about atrocities against women and children. She focused towards making sure that every girl becomes self-dependent and proves her mettle to the world and to herself.

And while we understand how this might not bring about the concrete change we as a nation are also in the need of, we believe it will instil the right kind of zest and confidence in young girls to go after what they want in life and also bring the society to terms with the fact that it is about time they become comfortable with the idea of seeing women in such positions of power.

Besides this, the district administration is also looking at celebrating ‘pink week’, focusing on women’s health and we think it’s a great idea to bring about awareness between men and women, all the while addressing important issues that otherwise go unnoticed.

Though we do hope that these initiatives stop coming around just for Women’s day, and become more than just token gestures.
