FI Serial Killer Sentenced To Death

Johnathan Swift once said, “Laws are like cobwebs, which may catch small flies, but let wasps and hornets break through.” This quote is a mirror image of the Indian judicial system. For too long, we have let perpetrators of heinous crimes like rape, acid attack and murder not only walk free but also manipulate our judiciary. But today, we are talking about a case where the wasps and hornets have not only been caught but also subjected to a punishment that fits the crime.

Some of you might’ve heard of an Indian serial killer (yes, we have those too), Kamruzzaman Sarkar, more commonly known as the “chain man”. The name referred to his modus operandi of strangling most of his victims, who were all women, with a metal chain.

Sarkar terrorized two districts in West Bengal- East Burdwan and Hooghly. When he was finally arrested in June 2019, he was charged with 15 cases- two rapes, seven murders and six attempts to murder. His crimes spread over 6 years from 2013-2019. And now, justice has finally been served and it has been done right. Sarkar has been sentenced to death on a rape and murder charge.

Bhaskar Mukherjee, superintendent of police of East Burdwan district said, “The accused Kamruzzaman Sarkar was sentenced to death by the additional district and session’s judge court for raping and murdering a 16-year-old girl in May 2019. He was arrested on June 2, 2019.”

The survivors told the police that he would pose as an official from the electrical department and tell them he was there to take a meter reading. Mukherjee also said, “He chose his prey carefully and usually struck in the afternoons when the men of the houses were away at work. He would conduct a recce for two-three days to find out whether the woman he wanted to target was alone at home.”

A few reports also say that he, like a lot famed serial killers, displayed necrophiliac tendencies. At the time of his arrest, the police said that he had sex with at least two women immediately after killing them. He also shoved foreign objects into their genitals.

The police said that Sarkar originally hailed from Murshidabad district. He used to stay with his wife, two sons and a daughter in East Burdwan and deal with scrap metal.

When he was finally arrested in 2019, interrogation revealed that his own superstitions brought him down. According to his astrologer, Sarkar believed that red was his lucky colour. So, he continued to ride a red scooter and a wear a red helmet even after some of his victims escaped. This made it very easy for the police to find him.

A police official said, “On June 1 last year, the police shared all clues that they could gather to civic volunteers who help cops in traffic management. The breakthrough came the next day.”

This was after the 16-year-old girl had been raped and murdered. The police teams and even taken the help of civic volunteers to catch Sarkar. When two civic volunteers spotted a red motorcycle they noted down its number and that’s when another red motorbike tried to speed away but crashed into the barricade and fell. That was Sarkar. And that’s how he was arrested.

Talking about the crime that got him convicted, Soumyajit Raha, the special public prosecutor of the case said, “The court observed that it was one of the rarest of the rare cases. I stressed on maximum punishment as the man had hit the minor helpless girl on her forehead and then tried to strangulate her and raped her. Nothing can be more heinous than this.”

India’s judicial system is flawed, there is no denying that. But sometimes the judgement on horrendous cases like still surprise us. Justice has been served and it feels very satisfying to know that there is one less perverse serial killer roaming around on our streets. However, we must not forget that winning these small battles doesn’t mean the war is over. There are still too many women out there who need similar justice.

Having said that, this will always be a landmark ruling.
