Masaba Gupta Just Shut Down Plagiarism Claims By Diet Sabya Against Her Beauty Line Like A True #GirlBoss

August 05, 2019 | by Sumona Bose

The topic of plagiarism in art isn’t a new one. Wherever there is inspiration involved, there is bound to be some form of overlap of ideas. Which is exactly what happened with Masaba Gupta and her new line of lipsticks and nail paints. The collection was released in collaboration  with popular e-tailer Nykaa. Apart from  the hype surrounding the famous designer’s foray into the beauty industry, it was the packaging that attracted a lot of buzz. Called out for having a design that was “copied” from another famous brand, netizens were quick to jump to conclusions with their own assertions.

Known for calling out fakes and copies in the industry, Diet Sabya were the first people on the scene to call out the inspiration.

The popular Instagram handle supposed that the paper packaging on Masaba’s lipsticks were inspired by Sephora’s collection Lip Stories. What followed were a sea of comments agreeing with the idea. One user said, “Not surprisingly, Nykaa always impresses us with its blatant design copying!”. While another chimed in with, “also, no one’s talking about this, but the name ‘lips and tips collection’ has been used by KL Polish (Kathleen Light’s old nail polish brand) for a very similar concept with matching polish colors to her collab lipsticks”. she elaborated. Usually with call outs like such, the designer in question hardly ever responds, which wasn’t the case for Masaba. The designer not only addressed the issue but kept it professional and articulate, check out her post below:

In the post Masaba rightly points out the resemblance paper packaging can have to one other. Also, the prints on the lipsticks are classic Masaba designs, which are totally original. The designer also pointed out the irony of the allegation, when her designs are some of the most trickled down prints in regional markets. While we might never settle the argument whether the packaging is a blatant copy or not, Masaba’s to the point response is definitely a fresh approach. She also captioned her post with the historic “That’s All!” Miranda Priestly one liner!

This direct response from Masaba comes after the much publicized PR disaster surrounding designer Rohit Bal.

Even though Bal was on the other side of the argument, the designer was criticised for his rude and elitist response to a designer who was accused of being inspired by his designs. There seems to be an understanding in the fashion industry to not acknowledge being on either side of the argument. The issue of plagiarism is too complicated when it comes to ideas, designs and art. But can Masaba’s clear cut response be the new mandate? Will designers consider speaking up against industry watchdogs like Diet Sabya, whether it is to apologize or clear the air? We shall see!
