What Is 'Women Of My Billion' About?
WOMB - Women of My Billion follows Srishti Bakshi as she travels across India by foot in the span of 240 days. During her walk from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, Srishti documents and understands the challenges faced by women due to gender inequality including crimes against women like sexual assault, and domestic violence while attempting to bring a change.
How Did Srishti's Journey Start?
The 97-minute-long documentary opens with Srishti witnessing a domestic abuse situation where she intervenes to save a woman after her husband beats her up, and leaves her bleeding and blames her for his shortcomings while also justifying his behaviour. This story of every 3rd household in the world shocks viewers to waking up.
WOMB Is A Wakeup Call For Us To Start Talking About Gender Violence
Directed by Ajitesh Sharma and produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Apoorva Bakshi, WOMB opens the floor for more conversations about the abuse and gender-based discrimination that women face. It is a reminder to not shy away from knocking on doors when someone is beating up their wife, daughter, mother or sister. It's a reminder that nothing will change for women if we don't talk about it.
Women of My Billion Unmasks Society
It airs our society's dirty laundry that we have been hiding away from. Srishti showcases how women are looked down upon as the weaker sex while men enjoy male privilege and a sense of entitlement (no thanks to patriarchy).
Srishti Showcases How Mentality Of Men Plays Into Gender Violence
Apart from engaging in conversations with women and hearing their stories, Srishti also speaks to men during her journey which helps her discover that mentality is why it is always "all men". The documentary showcases the shocking reality of how men think women should behave to prevent being abused.
WOMB Is Proof Of How Srishti Is Encouraging Change
The documentary also shows how the gender rights activist holds workshops with women to educate them and teach them how important it is to speak up and be financially independent to uplift themselves and future generations of women.
I couldn't be more thankful that Priyanka Chopra and Apoorva Bakshi decided to tell stories of real women and give them a platform to be heard and this documentary goes show what truly happens when women start speaking up.
