Satyajit Ray, the brilliant filmmaker and writer who left a legacy behind was also known for the strong portrayal of women on screen.

From Pather Panchali to Ghore Baire, women in Satyajit Ray’s films always stood apart!

Rabindranath Tagore’s story of The filmmaker’s famous 1964 film Charulata was hailed because of the female character. Actress  Madhabi Mukherjee nailed the role of a woman who broke from the shackles of a suppressed life to live a life of her own!

Satyajit Ray’s Apu trilogy remains unmatched. The character of Sarbojaya played by Karuna Banerjee in Pather Panchali and Aparajito has layers that only unfold with time.

Sharmila Tagore’s character in Devi talks about the consequences of superstitious beliefs that a woman suffers. The film was based on Provatkumar Mukhopadhyay’s short story.

Alokananda Roy’s character from Satyajit Ray’s first original script Kanchanjunga is highly-acclaimed even today. Even the dressing sense of women in the films was so on point, and depicted modernity with a touch of tradition!

Swatilekha Chatterjee’s character from the 1984 film Ghare Baire also revolved around a woman’s perspectives about life that changes with the men she meets. It's nuanced and layered!
