Zohran Mamdani waved at his fans after his speech and walked to his wife, Rama Duwaji, for a hug as ‘Dhoom Machale’ played behind him. He was later joined by his parents, Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani and Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, on stage. The video of the iconic song playing at his victory event left the internet in shock. Many X (Formerly Twitter) users called it his ‘unreal aura.’ While others called it “a perfect finale for a campaign that shattered norms and electrified New York’s political stage.”
In a passionate victory speech, Mamdani credited New York’s younger voters for propelling him to power, declaring that their generation is now responsible for the city’s future. He celebrated what he described as the end of a long-standing political dynasty and also took a jab at US President Donald Trump, warning that New Yorkers stand united against him. He is set to be sworn in as New York City’s mayor on January 1.
Shortly after his win was confirmed by major media outlets, he posted a video from the City Hall subway station, symbolically capturing a train announcement declaring “Zohran for New York City” as the final stop.
