A Bengaluru woman recently called out the quick commerce platform Zepto after receiving an inappropriate notification, sparking widespread outrage online. Pallavi Pareek, a customer of Zepto, shared her experience on LinkedIn, highlighting the offensive and unsolicited nature of the message she received. The notification, sent by Zepto, read, “I miss you, Pallavi. Says i-Pill emergency contraceptive pill,” accompanied by teary-eyed emojis.

What Had Happened?

Ms. Pareek quickly took to LinkedIn to share a screenshot of the message and express her disappointment. She stated that she had never ordered an emergency contraceptive pill from the platform and found the notification intrusive and inappropriate. In her post, she tagged Zepto and Zepto Cares, questioning the logic behind such a message. “Even if I had ordered an emergency pill, it’s insensitive to suggest that it should be ‘missing’ me or that I should be ‘missing’ it,” Ms. Pareek wrote. She further added, Why am I getting such a notification when I’ve never placed this kind of order with your service?

As an advocate for workplace safety and a professional specializing in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Ms. Pareek highlighted the problematic nature of the message. She emphasized that marketing messages must be sensitive and appropriate. “There’s a line between humor and sleaziness. Notifications should never become flirty or intrusive this crosses that line.” Despite her criticism, Ms. Pareek clarified that her post was not an attack on Zepto’s services or the availability of emergency contraceptives. She explained that her intention was to draw attention to the lack of thoughtfulness in such messaging. “I use and appreciate the app for its quick services, but this incident showcases a major flaw in their approach,” she wrote.

The post quickly gained traction online, with many users expressing their own opinions. One user commented, “Looks like they’re fishing for attention through controversy. This type of marketing feels manipulative.” Another joked, “I signed up for fresh groceries, not unsolicited advice on emergency products. Maybe save the flirty texts for dating apps, Zepto.” Some users also pointed out that intrusive advertising has become a major issue with online platforms. One person noted, “This is exactly why I avoid installing these apps. They often cross the line with their targeted marketing.”

What Did The Company Say?

In response to the backlash, Zepto issued a public apology on LinkedIn. Acknowledging their mistake, the company said, “Hey Pallavi, we messed up and are genuinely sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. We understand how this could be offensive and have immediately taken steps to address and correct the issue.” Zepto further explained that they are updating their processes and retraining their team to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. “We promise this won’t happen again,” the company assured, expressing their commitment to improving customer experience.
