In recent events, a seven-month -old Japanese macaque called Punch has become the topic of discussion after he was seen being rejected by his mother. The internet instantly ran to protect him, with many sympathising with him being lonely along with his plush toy. Born last July, he had to struggle to integrate into the troop. If you’re wondering why Punch’s mother left her newborn baby, well then, experts have suggested several reasons for maternal abandonment in primates. Inexperience could be one reason, since first-time mothers lack the skills needed to care for infants. Since Punch was born in extreme heat, an extreme environmental condition can cause psychological stress. In high-risk conditions, mothers may also prioritise their own survival. The last reason could be that Japanese macaques live in high matrilineal hierarchies, lower ranking mothers and infants face higher levels of social stress.

Newborn macaques instinctively cling to their mothers for muscle strength and security. After attempting alternatives like rolled towels, zookeepers introduced a stuffed orangutan toy to give Punch something to hold. What looks to be bullying in viral videos may simply be normal macaque social conduct. Japanese macaques establish authority through physical activity. Even if his mother had remained present, Punch was sure to face aggression from the troop’s hierarchy. However, without maternal support, he may be more vulnerable.
