Music composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their separation after being married for 29 years. The couple shared the news on social media, requesting privacy during this challenging time. Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, mentioned that the decision to part ways was mutual, stemming from emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their love for each other, they could not overcome the difficulties they faced.
Details On Saira Banu
Saira Banu, born in December 1973 in Kutch, Gujarat, comes from an upper-middle-class family with a strong cultural background. She has often been recognized for her charity work, contributing to causes related to healthcare, education, and community welfare. Her philanthropic efforts have earned her a reputation as a kind and socially aware individual.
Saira and AR Rahman’s marriage was arranged. Rahman once shared that his mother and sister first noticed Saira at the shrine of the Sufi saint Moti Baba in Chennai. Despite not knowing her family, Rahman’s mother felt an immediate connection and decided to approach them. The first time they met was on January 6, 1995, which was also AR Rahman’s 28th birthday.
While recalling the meeting Rahman described Saira Banu as someone who is beautiful as well as gentle. Their initial meeting was brief, but they continued their conversations over the phone. Speaking in English, Rahman directly asked Saira if she wanted to marry him. Back then, Saira was shy and soft-spoken a stark contrast to her more outgoing personality in later years.
The couple tied the knot on March 12, 1995, when Saira was 21 and Rahman was 28 and later became parents to three children: daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen.
