In a recent turn of events, a civil services officer in Assam has been arrested for allegedly amassing wealth disproportionate to her declared assets. Nupur Bora, who joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019, was taken into custody after Rs 92 Lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 2 Crores and Rs 10 Lakhs were recovered from her rented house in Barpeta. Who Is Nupur Bora?
Nupur Bora was born in Golaghat in 1989 and joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019 as an Assistant Commissioner in Karbi Anglong district. In 2023, she was assigned to Barpeta as a Circle Officer. Bora, an English literature graduate from Gauhati University, formerly worked as a lecturer at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) before joining the state service.
During her time in Barpeta, she allegedly helped arrange the illicit transfer of government and Satra land to suspected illegal immigrants known as Miya, according to Moneycontrol. In Assam, Bengali-speaking Muslims, also known as Miya Muslims, are usually presented by the BJP as illegal migrants from Bangladesh and a demographic “threat” to indigenous Assamese populations.
“This officer had transferred Hindu land to suspicious individuals in exchange for money when she was posted in the Barpeta revenue circle,” CM Sarma alleged, adding that strict action has been initiated against her.
The case comes less than a year after another contentious instance involving bureaucrat Puja Khedkar, who was found guilty of falsifying her identity to gain extra exam tries. The Centre expelled Khedkar from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) after she falsified her caste and disability status. She was found to own ₹22 crore in property, fancy automobiles, gold, and diamonds.
