In recent events, the head of an NGO in Nagpur named Fazil Qasi has been arrested on charges including alleged molestation, religious conversion, and coercion of women employees to accept Islamic attire and practices. This has gained much attention in the nation as it is very similar to many other alleged incidents of s*xual and religious harassment in Maharashtra, like the case in Nashik and Amravati’s Paratwada. Read to know more about it here.

Who Is Nagpur NGO Head Fazil Qasi?

Reportedly, the accused, Fazil Qasi, is the head of the Universal Multipurpose Society NGO. The police stated that he allegedly pressured women associated with his organisation to follow Islamic customs like wearing certain clothes. The main complainant is a woman working at the NGO serving as its administration and HR Head. She reportedly accused him of repeatedly forcing her to follow Islam against her will. After this, Qasi was taken into police custody.

As they investigate the organisation’s funding sources as well as financial transactions, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has also joined the probe. The officials are also investigating other women within the NGO who have faced similar pressure. This happened after the infamous case in Nashik linked to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was gaining attention. This sparked debate about the attempts to influence religious conversions in work settings.

The FIR suggests that the 23-year-old woman had been working with the organisation since September 2023 and had revealed multiple incidents of misconduct. She said that on her birthday celebration in the office on July 18, 2024, Fazil Qasi allegedly called her into the cabin and tried to hug her without consent and even kissed her forehead, saying that he didn’t want to leave her.
