In recent events, a 28-year-old teacher named Divya Singh from UP’s Gorakpur has made history by becoming the first Indian and second woman globally to reach the Mount Everest Base Camp (EBC) on a bicycle. Divya Singh dealt with freezing temperatures as cold as -12°C, thinning oxygen levels, and high-velocity winds. Singh cycled 10 to 12 hours every day via tough mountain paths, including steep climbs and uneven trails. In spots where the terrain was insurmountable, she carried her bicycle on her shoulders rather than turning back. Her journey from Kathmandu comprised difficult sections through Saleri, Surke, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Lobuche, and lastly Gorakshep before reaching the base camp.

Uma Singh released a video of her arrival at the base camp on Instagram. In the footage, Divya stands with her bicycle, clutching the Indian tricolour against a mountain backdrop. Congratulations, Divya Singh; you are the first woman from India to reach Everest Base Camp on a bicycle. “It’s a proud moment for our Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India,” the video description read on Instagram.

Singh prepared for this record-breaking accomplishment with hard self-training and local practice, despite inadequate resources. Gorakhpur district officials flagged off her trip from Vikas Bhavan, later hailing her victory as a landmark achievement for women’s empowerment in India.
