Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, a veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, was attacked on Wednesday during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her official residence in Civil Lines. A man in his 30s went up to the chief minister, gave her a paper, and after exchanging heated words, slapped her in public. The attacker also reportedly attempted to grab her hair before being subdued by security officials and arrested.
The incident has caused shock in political circles. The Delhi BJP organisation has termed it a “mishap” and explained that the motive of the attack is yet to be determined. The police officials have confirmed that the man has been arrested and an investigation is being conducted. Witnesses to the function claimed that the attacker first approached the CM but went berserk in an instant, leaving everyone in awe.
Who is Rekha Gupta?
Rekha Gupta (19 July 1974) has been the Chief Minister of Delhi since February 2025. The seasoned BJP leader is the councillor for Shalimar Bagh constituency in the Delhi Assembly. She started her political career in student politics as the president of Delhi University Students’ Union in 1996. She has also served as a three-time councillor and Chairman of the Education Committee of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Prior to becoming CM, Gupta had contested several elections at the state and municipal levels and was an important functionary in the BJP’s Delhi unit, serving as general secretary and party vice president of its Mahila Morcha. She has also been involved with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad during her formative years.
In the 2025 Delhi Assembly polls, she had defeated AAP candidate Bandana Kumari by close to 30,000 votes in a huge win for the BJP in the capital.

Attack during Jan Sunwai
The weekly Jan Sunwai was meant to link citizens with the chief minister directly. On Wednesday, though, it became a scene of chaos when the attacker abused Gupta verbally before slapping her. The eyewitnesses called the incident “shocking” and “deeply disturbing.” BJP leaders have cried foul, condemning the act as a major security lapse.
Police are probing the man’s history and motives. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has not made any public announcement, but reports from her office indicate she is safe.
