Dr Manmohan Singh, India’s 13th Prime Minister, passed away on Thursday, December 26. While he was a renowned scholar and leader of economic reform, his three daughters were none less. His personal life was distinguished by his wife – Gursharan Kaur, and his three daughters- Upinder Singh, Amrit Singh, and Daman Singh. All three of them have excelled in their niches and here’s a glimpse of that.

Upinder Singh: Upinder Singh is a renowned historian and serves as the Dean of faculty at Ashoka University. She was also the head of the history department at the University Of Delhi. Alumna of McGill University, Montreal, her hard work towards history, archaeology, and political ideas is excellent.

Her books- “A History of Ancient and Early Medieval India” and “Political Violence in Ancient India” are highly acclaimed. She also did fellowships in renowned colleges like Harvard, Cambridge, and Leiden and was awarded the Infosys Prize for Social Sciences.

Amrit Singh: Amrit Singh is a prominent human rights lawyer and a Stanford Law School Professor of Practice. She is also the founder and Executive Director of the Rule of Law Impact Lab. Amrit has degrees from Yale Law School, Oxford, and Cambridge University, and has represented some of the world’s most important human rights issues, including groundbreaking lawsuits against torture and arbitrary detention practices.

Her work entails international advocacy, with cases before the European Court of Human Rights and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Her articles on democracy and the rule of law have been published in prestigious journals such as The Guardian and The New York Times.

Daman Singh: Daman Singh is an outstanding writer who is noted for her deeply personal and analytical works. She is the author of the memoir “Strictly Personal: Manmohan and Gursharan,” which reveals intimate details about her parents’ lives. Her other writings, including “The Sacred Grove” and “Nine by Nine,” demonstrate her range as a storyteller. Born in Chandigarh in 1963, she has a rich cultural and intellectual inheritance that complements her father’s accomplishments.
